In the quiet community of Allendale, Michigan, the morning of March 13, 1982, brought with it a horrific discovery that would forever scar the town. Mary Jane Avery Paulson, a 40-year-old woman, was found deceased in her family's farmhouse. The tragedy, however, extended far beyond a single loss. Alongside Mary Jane were the bodies of her husband, Robert W. Paulson, who was 42, and their three daughters: 18-year-old Cynthia, 13-year-old Carla Sue, and 8-year-old Casey Kay. The family had been shot execution-style before their home was set ablaze in an attempt to conceal the crime.
The investigation into the brutal slayings led authorities to a former colleague of Mary Jane's, a man named Maris Karklins. His behavior had been described as bizarre, and he harbored an intense animosity towards Mary Jane. The case against him solidified when, after being arrested for shooting his own mother, Karklins confessed to the murders of the Paulson family. He provided a chilling and detailed account of the killings, claiming he was on a divine mission.
During his confession, Karklins revealed that he went to the Paulson's home on that fateful morning and spent two hours with Robert and Mary Jane before he believed he received a 'sign from God' to carry out the executions. He stated that he believed the family were demons and referred to their home as a 'witch's cauldron.' Following the shootings, he set fire to the house.
Maris Karklins was arraigned on five counts of first-degree murder. He waived his right to a jury trial, placing his fate in the hands of an Ottawa County Circuit Judge. Despite an initial notice of an insanity defense, Karklins later had it withdrawn. In February of 1983, he was found guilty on all five counts and received five life sentences, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life in prison. A month later, he would receive a sixth life sentence for the murder of his mother.
