In the early morning hours of January 9, 1996, a sense of routine patrol was shattered by a fatal encounter that left a community in mourning. Patrick Michael Prohm, a 32-year-old male police officer with the Detroit Police Department, was diligently serving his city when he spotted a stolen Cadillac. Just after 12:30 a.m., he began to follow the vehicle, waiting for backup before initiating a stop. The situation escalated at 12:46 a.m.
at the intersection of Charlevoix Street and Joseph Campau Avenue when the stop was attempted.
As Officer Prohm and his fellow officers moved to apprehend the occupants, the suspect driving the stolen car exited the vehicle and fired a single, devastating shot from a handgun. The bullet struck Officer Prohm in the head, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The sudden violence of the moment was met with a swift response from the other officers present. They returned fire, striking the gunman.
The suspect was taken into custody, initially believed to be unharmed by the exchange of gunfire. However, upon his arrival at a detention area, it was discovered that he had sustained a fatal bullet wound to the chest. A large, puffy jacket he was wearing had concealed the injury. It was later revealed that this same individual was also a suspect in a multiple shooting that had occurred in Kalamazoo the previous night. Officer Prohm, who had served with the department for over two years, was survived by his three children, parents, and six siblings.
