In the quiet community of Muskegon, Michigan, the Thanksgiving holiday of 1998 took a grim and tragic turn, forever marking the memory of 50-year-old Stephen Privacky and his family. A respected fifth-grade teacher, Stephen was known as a dedicated educator who was proud of his family. However, simmering tensions within the family home would soon erupt into an act of violence that would leave the community in shock and mourning. On Sunday, November 29, 1998, what should have been a peaceful day of family gathering became a scene of unimaginable horror.
The tragic events unfolded within the Privacky family's split-level home. It began with Stephen's 18-year-old son, Seth, who, after an argument with his father, methodically carried out the murders of five people. Using his father's. 22-caliber Ruger handgun, Seth's first victim was his 19-year-old brother, Jedediah, who was shot in the back of the head while watching television. When Stephen returned home with his 78-year-old father, John Privacky, they were both ambushed and fatally shot. Seth then waited for his 49-year-old mother, Linda, to get out of the shower before shooting her as well. The final victim was 19-year-old April Boss, Jedediah's girlfriend, who arrived at the house and was killed after witnessing the horrific scene.
Following the shootings, Seth Privacky called his 18-year-old friend, Steven Wallace, to help him move the bodies and create the appearance of a robbery. Their attempts to conceal the crime were interrupted when April Boss's parents arrived late that night, concerned that their daughter had not returned home. They discovered Stephen Privacky's body in the driveway and immediately contacted the police. When authorities arrived, Wallace was apprehended as he tried to flee from a wooded area near the home. Seth managed to elude police for nearly 13 hours before he was found, rain-soaked and shivering, hiding in a nearby barn.
Both Seth Privacky and Steven Wallace were arrested and faced five counts of open murder. Seth confessed to the killings, stating that he had been angry with his family, particularly his father who had threatened to evict him. He pleaded no contest to the murder charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Steven Wallace was later acquitted of the murder charges but was charged with being an accessory after the fact. In a final, violent chapter to the story, Seth Privacky was shot and killed on July 15, 2010, during a failed escape attempt from the Kinross Correctional Facility in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
