In the summer of 2006, a bright and loving five-year-old girl named NiYauna Sanay Jones had her life tragically cut short. On Thursday, July 6, 2006, in Flint, Michigan, NiYauna was the victim of a senseless act of gun violence. She was caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting and passed away at Hurley Medical Center. A resident of Flint, NiYauna was born on January 10, 2001, to Erma M. Jones and Darren Mance. She was known as a vibrant child who attended Bethlehem Temple Church of the Apostolic Faith.
The investigation into her death led to the identification and prosecution of three individuals. The gunman was identified as one of the co-defendants, while another co-defendant, Anthony J. Reed, was identified as the driver of the vehicle used in the fatal shooting. A third individual, Michael Levelle Smith, was also implicated in the crime. The case brought immense grief to the family and resonated as a tragic loss within the Flint community.
Ultimately, justice was served in the case of NiYauna's death. Anthony J. Reed pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and felony firearm. The gunman faced a potential sentence of up to life in prison. Michael Levelle Smith pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact to a felony. In April 2007, the Genesee County Prosecutor announced the guilty pleas, bringing a measure of closure to a case that highlighted the devastating impact of gun violence on the community.
