In the quiet community of Sumpter Township, Michigan, the life of 22-year-old Stephanie Michelle McClure, a Caucasian female, was tragically cut short on October 6, 2007. Having recently moved into the Holiday West mobile home park, her new beginning turned into a horrifying end when she was found shot to death. An investigation revealed she had been shot multiple times, with two bullets to her face and three to her back, all believed to have been fired from a small-caliber handgun.
The young woman was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a community in shock and a family devastated by the senseless violence. Friends and family remembered Stephanie as a happy, fun-loving, and outgoing person with a beautiful personality and a huge heart.
The police investigation quickly gained momentum, and thanks to multiple tips, authorities executed six search warrants across Monroe County, Van Buren Township, and Ypsilanti Township. These efforts led to the arrest of two individuals who were known to Stephanie: 18-year-old Paula Renai Bennett and her 20-year-old boyfriend, Kyron Darell Benson. The motive for the brutal slaying appeared to stem from a dispute over stolen property. Bennett and Benson had discovered that several items, including a video game console, clothing, and shoes, were missing from their apartment. Benson grew increasingly angry, blaming Stephanie for the theft and began making threats to kill her.
The events leading up to the murder painted a grim picture of misplaced anger and escalating violence. On the night of the shooting, after discovering their puppy was also missing and later finding it deceased in their freezer, Benson's rage intensified, and he once again accused Stephanie. Later that evening, with Bennett and another friend in the car, Benson located Stephanie. Bennett provided directions to Stephanie's trailer, and after pointing her out, Benson carried out his fatal threats. Bennett then drove the getaway car.
Paula Bennett and Kyron Benson were tried jointly but with separate juries. Bennett was charged with first-degree murder on a theory of aiding and abetting. The prosecution argued that she was aware of Benson's murderous intent and actively assisted him. Benson was charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Ultimately, both were found guilty. Kyron Darell Benson was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder, along with sentences for the firearm charges. Paula Renai Bennett was also convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Their subsequent appeals were denied, solidifying their responsibility for the tragic and untimely death of Stephanie Michelle McClure.
