On May 17, 2014, a violent incident unfolded in Detroit, Michigan, claiming the life of 32-year-old Allen Shackleford, a Black male resident of the city. Shackleford was spending time with friends, including Riccardo Martin and Jermayne Fuller, at a familiar neighborhood gathering spot shortly before dark. The group was socializing when a gray Cadillac pulled up to the location.
Inside the vehicle was a man later identified as DeQuanta Jovan Hudson, also known by the nickname "Tay."
The interaction began with a brief and ominous exchange. Hudson waited in his car for a moment before Fuller asked for his identity. Shackleford and Martin both identified the driver. Upon being recognized, Hudson issued a threatening remark, promising the group that he would return, before driving away from the scene. True to his word, Hudson returned to the area a short time later. Upon his arrival, he immediately approached Shackleford, drawing a firearm. Witnesses reported that Hudson made a statement referencing a previous grievance, mentioning "tough shit," before discharging the weapon. Shackleford was struck in the head by a fatal gunshot and collapsed to the ground.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Hudson attempted to secure the silence of the witnesses, telling them not to inform authorities of his actions before he fled the scene on foot. Law enforcement investigation eventually led to Hudson's arrest. He was charged in connection with Shackleford's death and faced trial in the Wayne County Circuit Court. During the proceedings, eyewitness testimony from the friends present that evening played a crucial role in establishing the sequence of events. On October 27, 2014, a jury convicted DeQuanta Jovan Hudson of first-degree premeditated murder, as well as charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm and using a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
