In the summer of 2014, a tragic and horrifying series of events unfolded in Wyoming, Michigan, culminating in the death of 18-year-old Brooke Slocum, who was eight months pregnant at the time. The harrowing ordeal began after Slocum and her 25-year-old boyfriend, Charles Oppenneer, arranged a sexual encounter with a man named Brady Oestrike through a Craigslist ad.
The initial meeting took place at Gezon Park on July 12, 2014.
Following this meeting, Oppenneer was brutally murdered and decapitated; his headless body was later discovered in the park on July 16. His head was never located. While investigating Oppenneer's death, police realized that his girlfriend, Brooke Slocum, was missing. The investigation into her disappearance led authorities to 31-year-old Brady Oestrike, after discovering email exchanges between him and Slocum detailing their planned meeting.
As police prepared to execute a search warrant at Oestrike's home, he fled in his vehicle, leading to a police chase. The pursuit ended when Oestrike crashed his car and then died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Tragically, authorities discovered Brooke Slocum's body in the trunk of his car; she had been strangled to death. Further investigation revealed the gruesome details of Slocum's final days. She had been held captive and tortured by Oestrike for five days before her murder.
A search of Oestrike's home uncovered a disturbing scene that confirmed the extent of his horrific actions. Investigators found a large collection of weapons, including firearms, knives, and ammunition, as well as restraints and other items indicating Slocum had been held against her will. Newly released videos from Oestrike's own surveillance system showed him preparing his home to hold Slocum captive. With the sole suspect deceased, the case did not proceed to a trial.
