In Flint, Michigan, a tragic incident cut short the life of 11-year-old William Lee Coppage on March 13, 2015. William, a Black male and a sixth-grade student at Burton Glen Charter School, was on the porch of a house when he was unintentionally shot by his 25-year-old cousin, Tovonte Jones. The shooting occurred as a result of Jones mishandling a firearm.
