On a tragic evening in Ionia Township, Michigan, the life of 57-year-old Deborah Kay Towner was cut short. On May 4, 2015, Ionia County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to her home on Kingston Road after receiving a 911 call in which no one spoke. Upon their arrival, they discovered the bodies of Deborah and her husband, 58-year-old Harry Emerson Towner, in the backyard of their residence.
The subsequent investigation by the sheriff's office concluded that Harry Towner had killed his wife before taking his own life in a murder-suicide.
Deborah, a female, was remembered as a kind and social person. Born on July 23, 1957, in Greenville, Michigan, she was a graduate of Ionia High School's class of 1975. She had been an employee at Walmart and, prior to that, Kmart. Her life was also marked by her involvement with Easton Church and her volunteer work with Safe Haven. Friends and family recalled her deep affection for animals, particularly her own cats and dogs.
The community was shocked by the violent end to Deborah's life, although some who knew the couple later spoke of warning signs regarding her husband's behavior. Neighbors described Harry Towner as someone who was rarely seen and could be perceived as a menace. One neighbor had even sought and obtained a personal protection order against him due to his threatening actions. In the wake of the murder-suicide, no further suspects were sought, and no arrests were made, as law enforcement determined Harry Towner acted alone.
