In the early hours of a Thursday morning in Detroit, Michigan, the life of Veronica Smart, a 34-year-old Caucasian woman, was tragically cut short. On July 20, 2023, just after 1 a.m., police responded to a report of a shooting at the intersection of Marseilles and Minerva streets on the city's east side. Upon arrival, they discovered Ms. Smart's body lying unresponsive in the middle of the street with a gunshot wound to her head. Medics were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The subsequent investigation by the Detroit Police Department swiftly pointed to a domestic violence situation. Investigators determined that Ms. Smart had been shot while inside a vehicle near the intersection where her body was found. Later that same day, authorities arrested her 31-year-old boyfriend, Eugene Demarcus McKeithan, in connection with her death. The investigation led prosecutors to allege that McKeithan shot Ms. Smart in the head while they were in the car together. It is further alleged that after the shooting, he pushed her body out of the vehicle and fled the scene.
Following his arrest, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged Eugene Demarcus McKeithan with one count of first-degree murder, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm. He was arraigned on July 23, 2023, in 36th District Court and was remanded to jail without bond. The case is now proceeding through the legal system, with a Probable Cause Conference and a Preliminary Examination scheduled in the weeks following the arraignment. If convicted of the first-degree murder charge, McKeithan faces a potential sentence of life in prison.
