In the summer of 2015, a tragic incident cut short the life of a young boy named Elijah Walker. The 3-year-old male was fatally shot on Monday, August 3, 2015, on the east side of Detroit. The event unfolded in the backyard of a home on Eastwood Avenue, near Kelly Road, where a day of play turned into a scene of loss.
On that Monday afternoon, Elijah and an 11-year-old boy were playing with a handgun. The older child had reportedly found the weapon in a bedroom closet inside the house.
He took the gun outside, and at some point, while the two were together, the gun discharged, striking Elijah in the face. The sound of the gunshot, initially mistaken by a neighbor for a firecracker, was followed by screams that alerted those nearby to the tragedy that had occurred. Elijah's mother, who was at the home visiting, made the devastating 911 call.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the 11-year-old boy was taken into custody and subsequently charged as a juvenile with manslaughter and felony firearm possession. The case was described by the Wayne County Prosecutor as a rare and tragic instance of charging someone so young with taking a life. The father of the 11-year-old was also arrested and faced charges including manslaughter and second-degree child abuse. The legal proceedings for the young suspect included a competency hearing to determine if he was fit to stand trial. The court set a bond for the juvenile, and he was released with the condition that he not be around firearms.
