In the quiet evening of November 1, 2015, in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan, a knock at the door shattered the peace of the Hargrove family. Eric Lee Hargrove Jr., a 37-year-old man, was fatally shot around 10:20 p.m. after answering the door to his home in the 800 block of Desoto Avenue. His family, who were present inside the house at the time, heard the knock that preceded the deadly encounter. After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, and a family member immediately called for help. Eric was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and died.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the homicide, though a motive for the killing remained elusive. In an effort to identify the person responsible, authorities released a composite sketch of a suspect. The individual was described as a Black male in his 20s, standing approximately 6 feet tall with a slim build. He had a light complexion, short hair, a beard, and a mustache, and was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants. Despite the release of the sketch and a public appeal for information, no arrests have been made in the case, leaving it unsolved.
For the Hargrove family, Eric's murder was a devastating echo of a past tragedy. Ten years prior, his brother, Shaunel Lee Vawters, was also shot and killed in the same neighborhood in 2005. Vawters was shot multiple times while riding his bicycle, and his murder also remains unsolved. The profound pain and sense of déjà vu experienced by the family were expressed by Eric's sister, Erica Hargrove. His mother, Doris Rougeau, and his fiancée, Luneshia Williams, have also publicly shared their heartbreak and their desperate pleas for answers and justice that remains elusive for their family.
