Anaiya Denise Montgomery, a 3-year-old Black female, was fatally shot in Detroit, Michigan on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016. The incident occurred in the early morning hours at a home on Riverview Street. Gunmen forced their way into the residence and opened fire, striking Anaiya as she was being held by her mother. The young girl died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Two men, aged 39 and 26, were also wounded in the shooting.
The investigation into Anaiya's death led to the arrest of several individuals. The crime was believed to be gang-related and not a random act of violence. Neighbors had reportedly expressed concerns about suspicious activities at the house prior to the shooting. The suspects were described as having fled the scene in a white or gray Grand Marquis.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Jonathan Burks, 30, was sentenced to 18 to 40 years in prison for home invasion and an additional two years for a firearm felony. Another man, 23-year-old Diallo Davis, received a sentence of nine to 20 years in prison for assault with intent to murder. A third individual, Paul Kendall, 24, who was charged with murder, was found hanged in his jail cell in what was determined to be an apparent suicide. A fourth suspect, 19-year-old Reginald Street, was also facing a hearing in connection with the case. The tragic death of Anaiya sparked an anti-violence rally in the community, calling for an end to the violence that took the life of the young child.
