In the spring of 2016, the life of 19-year-old Ja-mall Thelonious Kitchens was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Muskegon, Michigan. On the evening of April 13th, as Kitchens was walking along Laketon Avenue, he was shot and killed in what authorities would later describe as a random robbery attempt. The sudden and brutal nature of his death sent ripples of shock and grief through the community.
The investigation into the homicide identified three individuals
connected to the crime. Johnnie Lee Brown III, who was 18 at the time, was identified as the shooter. Nicholas Vasquez, also 18, and 17-year-old Nicholas Kissling were implicated in the conspiracy to rob Kitchens. The ensuing legal process sought to bring justice for the untimely death of the young man.
Johnnie Lee Brown III, a Black male, faced the most serious charge. He was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder for his role in the killing of Ja-mall Kitchens. The court sentenced him to a lengthy prison term of 30 to 60 years, ensuring he would be held accountable for his actions on that fatal night.
Nicholas Vasquez, identified as Hispanic, was also brought to justice for his involvement. He was convicted of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and received a sentence of 4 years and 9 months to 23 years in prison. Another teenager, Nicholas Kissling, was also charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery in connection with the incident that led to Kitchens' death.
