Mariah took the firearm into a room where her younger siblings, a three-year-old and a one-year-old, were also present. In a moment of innocent incomprehension, she turned the weapon on herself and fired a single shot, striking herself in the neck. Her grandfather, who was in another room watching television, heard the shot and rushed to find his granddaughter grievously wounded. A frantic call to 911 brought emergency services to the home, but despite their efforts, Mariah was pronounced dead at the hospital.
