investigators. Authorities quickly determined that Hope Elferdink was the victim of a murder-suicide perpetrated by her husband, 43-year-old Mark Elferdink, a Calhoun County Sheriff's deputy. The incident occurred in the backyard of their Emmett Township home. The couple had been going through a divorce, though they were still living in the same house at the time of the tragedy. Hope had reportedly begun a new romantic relationship, and while the individual was interviewed by police, he was not considered a suspect.
