In the early hours of August 10, 2016, police in Charlotte, Michigan, responded to a call for assistance at a residence on South Sheldon Street. Mark had reportedly thrown his girlfriend down the basement stairs and had threatened to handcuff her to a post, further threatening to kill both her and their infant child. Feeling that her life and the life of her child were in imminent danger and with no other way to escape, she used a gun she had in a holster.
