In a tragic turn of events on May 6, 2017, Murray Upshaw, a 39-year-old visually impaired man, was fatally shot in his home on Epworth Street in Detroit, Michigan. The incident, which also claimed the life of 27-year-old Sharietta Jefferson, unfolded after a verbal altercation escalated into deadly violence. At the time of his death, Upshaw was a new father to a baby girl.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly focused on a member of Upshaw's own family.
His son, Dante Louis Coker, also known as Dante Binion, was identified as the perpetrator. Following the shooting, Coker fled the scene but was apprehended by the Detroit Police the very next day at the corner of East Warren and Eastlawn.
Dante Louis Coker was subsequently charged with two counts of First Degree Premeditated Murder and one count of Felony Firearm. The case proceeded through the 36th District Court. Ultimately, Coker pleaded no contest to the charges brought against him. For his role in the deaths of his father and Sharietta Jefferson, he was sentenced to a prison term of 28 to 50 years.
