On a summer afternoon in Lansing, Michigan, the life of 22-year-old Trevon Rashad McDuffy was tragically cut short. On July 11, 2017, McDuffy was fatally shot in the parking lot of a convenience store in Delta Township, a violent end to a young life that was remembered for its passion and energy.
Trevon, known to his friends and family as 'Tre,' was a former student at Everett High School, where he had been a talented football and basketball player.
He was a father and was described as a passionate, loving, and kind-hearted individual who was fiercely loyal to those he cared about. He had a creative side as well, with a great passion for music and dreams of pursuing a career as a rap artist. He was even planning a move to Florida to further these ambitions.
The shooting was not a random act of violence. Authorities quickly identified a suspect, 23-year-old Nathaniel Jamar Bowers, and stated that he and McDuffy knew each other. While the motive was not immediately made public, the targeted nature of the attack was emphasized by law enforcement. In the days following the shooting, a manhunt for Bowers was launched, with police considering him armed and dangerous.
The search for Bowers came to a peaceful end when he turned himself in to the police three days after the fatal shooting. He was subsequently arraigned on charges of open murder, carrying a concealed weapon, and a felony firearm charge. Following his arraignment, Bowers was held without bond. The case then moved into the legal system, where Bowers pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and felony firearm. In a subsequent court appearance, he was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison for the second-degree murder charge, alongside concurrent and consecutive sentences for the firearms charges.
