On a cold February evening in Dearborn, Michigan, the life of 37-year-old Ismaeel Abdulla was cut short. On February 23, 2018, police responded to reports of a man down near the intersection of Whittington and Canterbury streets. There, they found Abdulla in the street, having sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Despite the immediate medical attention he received, his injuries proved fatal.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to Robert Gonzalez, a 38-year-old resident
of Westland, as the primary suspect. Investigators learned that Abdulla and Gonzalez were acquaintances. A collaborative effort between the Dearborn Police Department, the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office, and the Michigan State Police led them to a residence in Madison Township where Gonzalez was located. He attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended in a parking lot in Adrian the following morning, on February 24th.
Following his arrest, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office brought several charges against Gonzalez, including first-degree murder, felony firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was also charged as a four-time habitual offender. During his arraignment in the 19th District Court, Gonzalez was denied bond and remanded to the Wayne County Jail.
As the case progressed through the legal system, a probable cause conference was scheduled for early March 2018, followed by a preliminary examination of the evidence against him. Ultimately, before the case could go to a full trial, Robert Gonzalez entered a plea of nolo contendere, or no contest, to a charge of second-degree murder. A judge in the Third Circuit Court subsequently sentenced him to a term of 17 to 50 years in prison for the death of Ismaeel Abdulla.
