On May 6, 1993, the Dearborn main post office became the scene of a tragic workplace shooting that claimed the life of 34-year-old Gary Montes, a male postal mechanic. The gunman was identified as Lawrence Jasion, a co-worker of Montes who had become disgruntled after being passed over for a promotion. Jasion arrived at the post office that morning with three handguns concealed inside a reinforced doughnut box.
In a sudden and violent outburst, Jasion opened fire, fatally wounding Montes. Two other postal employees, Sandra Brandstatter and Bruce Plumb, were also injured in the attack. After the shooting, Jasion turned one of the handguns on himself, taking his own life at the scene. The investigation into the incident revealed that some of Jasion's colleagues had previously expressed concerns about his behavior, considering him a potential threat. Brandstatter, in particular, who had been promoted over Jasion, had voiced fears for her safety.
Despite these concerns being reported, an interview conducted by federal and postal officials with Jasion had concluded that he did not pose a threat. The tragic events of that day highlighted the devastating consequences of this assessment. In the aftermath of the shooting, the Dearborn post office was temporarily closed to allow employees to receive counseling and support. As the perpetrator died by suicide at the scene, there were no arrests or subsequent criminal proceedings in connection with the death of Gary Montes.
