In the early hours of a Monday in Detroit, Michigan, the life of 22-year-old Jaymon Thomas was tragically cut short in a violent encounter that was part of a deadly crime spree. On February 26, 2018, Thomas was in his home on Faust Avenue with his girlfriend, Shatika Yates, and their infant daughter. The couple was awakened by the sound of gunshots, a horrifying prelude to the violence that would unfold.
The armed intruder was identified as George Anthony Davis, Thomas's 27-year-old
cousin. According to Yates, Thomas's last words to his cousin were pleas, 'I'm your cousin, I'm your cousin.' Despite this, Davis shot his cousin multiple times. As the fatal shots rang out, Yates heroically grabbed their baby and sought refuge in the attic, hiding from the unfolding horror. From her hiding place, she heard Davis's footsteps as he moved through the house before he eventually left, stealing her car.
After Davis had gone, Yates rushed to her boyfriend's side, finding him on the floor gasping for air. She knelt beside him, urging him to hold on, but his injuries were too severe. Thomas took his last breath as she watched. Fearing for her and her child's safety, she fled to a nearby Rite Aid to call for help and notify Thomas's family.
The murder of Jaymon Thomas was not an isolated incident. It was the second stop in a violent rampage by Davis, who had earlier that day shot and killed three other people at a gas station on Fenkell Avenue. The victims of the gas station shooting were Davis's girlfriend, her father, and a neighbor. Later that same day, after a police chase that crossed state lines into Ohio, George Anthony Davis died by suicide. His death brought an end to the manhunt, but also precluded any legal proceedings or trial for the four lives he had taken.
