Devin Woods, a 19-year-old male from Ypsilanti, Michigan, was fatally shot on November 26, 2018, in a tragic encounter that stemmed from a drug deal. The incident unfolded outside the Hype Athletics facility located on Howe Road in Wayne, Michigan. Woods had arranged to meet with Antoine Perry, who was 16 years old at the time, for a marijuana transaction. The situation escalated when Perry attempted to take the marijuana from Woods without paying for it.
This led to a confrontation that resulted in Perry shooting Woods multiple times.
After being shot, Woods ran into the Hype Athletics facility in an attempt to find help. He was quickly transported to Beaumont Hospital in Wayne, but he succumbed to the multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead. The entire violent exchange was captured by a surveillance camera outside the athletic center, and this footage became a critical piece of evidence in the ensuing investigation. His mother described him as a former standout high school student who was preparing for knee surgery before his life was cut short.
A few days after the shooting, Antoine Perry was arrested in connection with the death of Devin Woods. Despite his age, Perry was charged as an adult with second-degree murder and a felony weapons charge. On June 18, 2019, Perry pleaded guilty to these charges in Wayne County's 3rd Circuit Court. During the sentencing on July 10, 2019, Wayne Circuit Judge Regina Thomas sentenced Perry to a term of 25 to 40 years in prison for the murder charge. He received an additional two-year sentence for the weapons charge, which is to be served consecutively. At the sentencing, Devin Woods' mother, Shannon Marie McNally, spoke of the profound and enduring grief her family has experienced as a result of her son's murder.
