On August 16, 2023, 47-year-old Jesús Reyes Tamez was found deceased inside his pickup truck on Old Pearsall Road in southwest Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas. A passerby discovered the vehicle with Tamez slumped over in the driver's seat and alerted authorities. Upon arrival, law enforcement determined that Tamez had suffered two gunshot wounds to the head, and the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office ruled his death a homicide.
Tamez, originally from Cadereyta, Jiménez, Nuevo León, México, was residing in San Antonio at the time of his death. He was survived by his children, Elizabel Tamez, Jesús Tamez, and Teresa Gómez; his companion, Olga Yanet Montalvo Garza; and numerous siblings and grandchildren. A public viewing and rosary were held on August 23, 2023, at Grace Cathedral Church in San Antonio to honor his memory.
The investigation into Tamez's death led to the arrest of 28-year-old Luis Fernando Barron Gonzalez in September 2024, over a year after the incident. Gonzalez, identified as a friend, co-worker, and roommate of Tamez, was charged with murder. According to court documents, Gonzalez allegedly lured Tamez to the location under the pretense of needing assistance after running out of fuel. It is reported that Gonzalez confessed to a date that he killed Tamez because Tamez intended to repossess a truck Gonzalez had purchased from him but had failed to make payments on. Additionally, Gonzalez is accused of stealing tools from Tamez and pawning them for over $1,000 the day following the murder.
Gonzalez's arrest brought some resolution to the case, highlighting the complexities of personal relationships entangled with financial disputes. The community and Tamez's family continue to mourn his loss, seeking justice for the untimely death of their loved one.
