The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 AM. Inside the house at the time were her 12-year-old son and the family's live-in nanny, both of whom were asleep and did not witness the shooting.

Investigators initially found signs of a forced entry in the garage, suggesting a burglary that had been interrupted. However, detectives soon concluded that the scene was staged to mislead them and that Murray was the intended target of a calculated attack.
