In the spring of 2019, the life of 16-year-old Darion O'Neal was tragically cut short in what was described as a deadly accident. A Black/African American male, Darion was fatally shot in the head on April 14, 2019, inside a home in Inkster, Michigan. The incident occurred in the back bedroom of a residence located in the 800 block of Clair Street, near the intersection of Avondale Street and Henry Ruff Road.
Darion was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a chaotic and unfortunate sequence of events. The person identified as responsible was 19-year-old Johtez Zyair Hoskins of Ypsilanti. According to police reports, Hoskins was handling a firearm when it discharged. The single shot struck Darion and also resulted in Hoskins accidentally shooting himself in the hand. Realizing the severity of Darion's injury, Hoskins fled the scene on foot.
Following his escape, Hoskins sought medical attention for his own gunshot wound at a nearby hospital. It was there that police were able to locate and apprehend him. Despite the belief that the shooting was accidental, the gravity of the outcome led to serious legal consequences for Hoskins.
Johtez Zyair Hoskins was charged with involuntary manslaughter and a felony firearms violation. He was arraigned in the 22nd District Court, and a probable cause conference was scheduled to further examine the details surrounding the case. The death of Darion O'Neal, a young man who was set to graduate from high school, left a significant impact on the Inkster community, highlighting the devastating consequences of firearm mishandling.
