On a winter evening in River Rouge, Michigan, the life of 48-year-old Dorian Patterson was tragically cut short. On January 30, 2020, Patterson was at a gathering with his brother, Gerald, and a man from his past, Kenyel Brown. The men were drinking together when Gerald departed for work, leaving Patterson in the company of Brown and two other individuals who had arrived, 52-year-old Kimberly Green and 44-year-old Clifton Smith.
Later that evening, an argument erupted between Brown,
Green, and Smith. The dispute escalated with horrifying speed, culminating in Brown opening fire. Patterson and Green were fatally wounded in the attack. Smith, though also shot, managed to escape the scene and alert the authorities, providing a crucial eyewitness account that implicated Brown in the double homicide.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on Kenyel Brown as the prime suspect, not only in the deaths of Dorian Patterson and Kimberly Green but also in a string of other violent crimes. Authorities launched a manhunt for Brown, who was already a known felon with a history of criminal activity. His brief but violent crime spree spread terror across Wayne County.
The search for Kenyel Brown came to a dramatic and fatal conclusion on February 24, 2020. After being identified by employees at an adult bookstore in Oak Park, police cornered him in the backyard of a home. As officers closed in to arrest him, Brown turned the gun on himself, inflicting a critical head wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries four days later, on February 28, 2020, without ever standing trial for the murders of Dorian Patterson and the other victims.
