In a tragic and senseless act of domestic violence, Markia Leggett, a 29-year-old Black female, was fatally shot in her Southfield, Michigan, apartment on the evening of March 22, 2020. The incident unfolded at the Pine Aire Apartments on West 12 Mile Road, where neighbors reported hearing gunfire shortly before 10 p.m. and promptly alerted the authorities.
Upon their arrival, Southfield police officers discovered Leggett inside her residence with a fatal gunshot wound.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. The horror of the event was compounded by the fact that Leggett’s two children were present during the shooting. Her 13-year-old child made the harrowing 911 call after witnessing the murder.
The investigation quickly centered on Leggett’s 32-year-old boyfriend, Adrian Deshawn Hill. Witnesses reported seeing Hill flee the apartment building immediately after the shooting. He was seen driving away in either a maroon or white Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck. Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren described the killing as a 'senseless murder' stemming from a domestic dispute.
A manhunt for Hill ensued, with law enforcement considering him armed and dangerous. He was known to have connections to Detroit, Westland, and Ann Arbor. Four days later, on March 26, 2020, Adrian Deshawn Hill was apprehended without incident in Detroit. He was subsequently charged with first-degree premeditated murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and two counts of felony firearm. During his arraignment on March 27, 2020, he was denied bond.
