In the quiet of an April evening in 2020, the life of David Lee Holmes, a 49-year-old male from the Flint area, was brought to a violent and tragic end. On the evening of April 20th, in a home located in the 11000 block of Hill Road in Gaines Township, near Swartz Creek, Michigan, a dispute escalated into a fatal shooting. Holmes sustained gunshot wounds to his head and torso, which ultimately led to his death at the scene.
The house where the incident unfolded had been the subject of a drug raid just a few weeks prior to the shooting.
The events that led to Holmes' death reportedly stemmed from an argument over money. According to the investigation, a group of individuals became involved in a confrontation with Holmes inside the residence. The altercation quickly turned physical, and at some point, firearms were drawn and shots were fired. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing individuals flee the home and leave in a vehicle. They were able to provide a description of the getaway car and its license plate number to the authorities.
Thanks to the swift relay of information from witnesses, law enforcement was able to act quickly. A Metro Police Authority officer spotted the suspect vehicle shortly after the shooting. With assistance from the state police, a traffic stop was conducted on Miller Road at Interstate 69 in Swartz Creek. Inside the vehicle, officers found and took into custody six individuals. The occupants of the car, all residents of Flint, were arrested in connection with the homicide.
The six individuals taken into custody were later identified and formally charged. Treyvon Anquis Holcolm, then 25, Asia Nicole Jenkins, 21, Darryon Shakur Miles, 23, and Raymond Keith Scarbrough, 18, were all charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felony firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon. Two other men, Leante Tyquon Brewer, 18, and Calvin Marquane Marks, 22, faced related charges. Brewer was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and tampering with evidence. Marks was charged with accessory after the fact to a felony, felony firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon.
In April of 2023, nearly three years after the death of David Lee Holmes, the six defendants accepted plea agreements. Darryon Shakur Miles pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, felony firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon. Treyvon Holcolm, Asia Jenkins, and Calvin Marks all pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, with Holcolm and Marks also pleading guilty to carrying a concealed weapon. Raymond Scarbrough entered a guilty plea to an open charge of murder, as well as felony firearm and carrying a concealed weapon. Leante Brewer pleaded guilty to the charges of felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and tampering with evidence. Following their pleas, all six awaited sentencing for their roles in the death of David Lee Holmes.
