On a winter evening in Lansing, Michigan, the life of 36-year-old Deandre Luckey, a Black male, came to a sudden and violent end. The date was December 29, 2024, when police were called to an apartment complex on Belle Chase Boulevard to investigate a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One was Deandre Luckey, and the other a 25-year-old man.
Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment, but Luckey ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The younger man survived the encounter.
The investigation that followed, conducted by both the Lansing Police Department and the Michigan State Police, pieced together the events of that night. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex proved to be a key piece of evidence. According to the Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney, the footage showed Luckey, who was armed with a pistol, initiating a physical altercation with the other man in an attempt to rob him. The confrontation escalated, and in response to the attack, the 25-year-old man fired his own weapon, striking Luckey three times in the upper torso.
After a thorough review of the evidence, the Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney made a definitive ruling on the case. It was determined that the shooting was an act of self-defense and was therefore justified under Michigan law. The law permits the use of deadly force if an individual reasonably believes their life is in imminent danger. As a result of this finding, no criminal charges were filed against the man who shot Deandre Luckey. In line with this decision, and the fact that he was not charged with a crime, authorities did not release the name of the surviving individual.
