In the days leading up to Christmas, a senseless act of violence irrevocably shattered the lives of a Detroit family. On the evening of December 23, 2024, 37-year-old Tommy Ireland, a man described by his loved ones as a 'gentle giant,' was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 8:40 PM in an apartment located in the 9200 block of Kercheval Avenue on the city's east side. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Ireland with a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of medical responders, he was pronounced deceased at the location. His family was left grappling with an inexplicable loss, unable to comprehend why anyone would want to harm a man they said had no enemies.
The day after the shooting, on Christmas Eve, police apprehended a suspect in connection with Tommy Ireland's death. Craig Michael Bergeron, a 35-year-old from Saline, Michigan, was taken into custody. Investigators believe Bergeron shot Ireland with a rifle before fleeing the scene in his SUV. Following his arrest, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged Bergeron with First Degree Murder, two counts of Felony Firearm, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He was arraigned on December 27, 2024, in Detroit's 36th District Court and was remanded to jail.
Further investigation into Bergeron's background revealed he was a former professional poker player. In the hours before the fatal shooting, he reportedly posted a series of disturbing and paranoid videos on his Facebook page. Authorities have indicated that they strongly suspect mental illness played a significant role in the tragic event, as there appeared to be no prior connection between Bergeron and Tommy Ireland.
