In the late hours of a Tuesday in Detroit, Michigan, the life of 14-year-old Chance Williams was tragically cut short in a devastating incident that unfolded on Mettetal Street. On June 16, 2020, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the young Black/African American male was fatally shot. The person responsible was his 22-year-old sister, Chinasia Eliza-Yvonna Williams.
The shooting, which appears to have been a horrific accident, happened after Chinasia removed the magazine from a handgun. Unaware that a single bullet remained in the chamber, she pointed the weapon at her younger brother and pulled the trigger. The single shot struck Chance, who was then rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The tragic event sent shockwaves through their family and the community, highlighting the grim consequences of mishandling firearms.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Chinasia Williams was taken into custody and subsequently faced legal consequences for her actions. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged her with one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of manslaughter - death by a weapon aimed with intent but without malice. During her arraignment, her defense attorney stated that she was extremely distraught over the death of her brother. Despite her lack of a prior criminal record, a judge set her bond at $75,000. Chinasia was scheduled for a probable cause conference on July 2, followed by a preliminary examination on July 9, to determine the next steps in the legal proceedings stemming from the fatal incident.
