On the evening of November 7, 2020, 35-year-old Cristina Elva Virola was found in front of a residence on William Street in Lansing, Michigan, suffering from critical gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported her to Sparrow Health System's Lansing Campus. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries three days later, on November 10, 2020.
This tragic incident marked the city's eleventh homicide of the year.
The shooting that led to Cristina's death was not the first time she had been a victim of gun violence that year. In April 2020, she had survived a shooting that stemmed from a road rage incident. Investigators with the Lansing Police Department do not believe the fatal shooting in November was a random act of violence.
As of now, the investigation into Cristina Elva Virola's murder remains open and unsolved. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Lansing Police Department has faced challenges in its investigation, including issues with understaffing within its cold case unit, which has impacted the ability to bring resolution to Cristina's family and other families affected by unsolved homicides in the city.
