The perpetrator of this horrific crime was John Evander Couey, a 46-year-old convicted sex offender
who resided in a trailer a short distance from Jessica's home. Couey held Jessica captive over a weekend, subjecting her to unimaginable trauma before ultimately ending her life by burying her alive. Her body was discovered on March 19, 2005, not far from where she was last seen, bringing a grim conclusion to the desperate search. Following a tip, authorities located and arrested John Couey in Augusta, Georgia. While in custody, he confessed to the kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder of Jessica Lunsford.
