On a summer day in Pontiac, Michigan, a dispute tragically cut short the life of 30-year-old Christopher Cintron-Mateo. A Hispanic man, Cintron-Mateo was with Jonathan Alvarado-Santiago, 29, outside a home on Valencia Drive on July 4, 2021, when an altercation broke out. The argument escalated to gunfire, and both Cintron-Mateo and Alvarado-Santiago were found lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds.
Responding Oakland County Sheriff's deputies discovered the grim scene and
located the firearm believed to have been used in the killings. The investigation quickly led them to Dazon Louis Mathis, who was 21 years old at the time and reportedly staying at the residence where the shooting occurred. Mathis was taken into custody in connection with the double homicide.
Following his arrest, Dazon Louis Mathis was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. During the legal proceedings, his defense attorney sought a psychiatric evaluation for Mathis, citing a history of memory issues and a family background of psychological concerns. After the evaluation, the court proceeded with the trial.
In December 2022, a verdict was reached in the case. Dazon Louis Mathis was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Christopher Cintron-Mateo and Jonathan Alvarado-Santiago. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, a mandatory sentence for his convictions.
