In the summer of 2021, the city of Detroit lost a beloved community member in a tragic act of violence. Lorenzo Gaines, a 30-year-old man, was fatally shot on July 13, 2021. This was not the first time violence had touched his life; a previous shooting had left him wheelchair-bound after he reportedly defended a woman from harassment. Despite this, he was known for his positive presence and dedication to the children in his neighborhood, often playing basketball and video games with them.
