On the morning of October 3, 2021, Denez Dupree, a 43-year-old man, was fatally shot outside a gas station in Detroit, Michigan. The incident occurred at the intersection of Dexter and Collingwood. Dupree was panhandling when he had a brief verbal exchange with a man who initially gave him some money.
Shortly after the interaction, the man, later identified as 19-year-old Christopher Calvin Williams, allegedly shot Dupree in what Detroit police described as a 'random execution'.
First responders found Dupree lying on the ground outside the gas station door and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The community was outraged by the senseless act of violence.
Following an investigation, which was aided by tips from the community, the Detroit Police Department arrested Williams on October 14, 2021. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Williams with one count of First-Degree Murder and one count of Felony Firearm. It was reported that Williams and Dupree were not acquainted with each other. Following his arrest, Williams was scheduled for a probable cause conference on November 9, 2021, and a preliminary examination on November 16, 2021.
