On June 1, 2022, Daniel 'Hutch' Hutchinson, a 47-year-old male jeweler from Oak Park, Michigan, was fatally shot in a targeted attack. The incident occurred while he was seated in his GMC Denali outside a pawn shop he owned on Greenfield Road. His wife was in the vehicle with him at the time but was not physically harmed. Hutchinson was a well-known figure in the community, recognized for providing custom jewelry to a celebrity clientele that included rappers.
The investigation that followed the shooting uncovered a complex murder-for-hire plot orchestrated by Hutchinson's own attorney, Marco Bisbikis. The motive behind the killing was greed, as Bisbikis had secretly written himself into Hutchinson's will and trust, positioning himself to inherit the couple's assets upon their deaths. To carry out the plan, Bisbikis hired Darnell Larry, who in turn subcontracted the killing to his cousin, Roy Larry. On the day of the murder, Roy Larry approached Hutchinson's vehicle on an e-bike and fired multiple shots, killing the jeweler.
Following an extensive investigation by the Oak Park Public Safety Department with assistance from federal and state agencies, multiple arrests were made. Roy Larry was identified as the shooter and was taken into custody shortly after the incident. The investigation subsequently led to the arrests of Marco Bisbikis, the mastermind; Darnell Larry; and another accomplice, Angelo Raptoplous. A fifth individual, Phillip Sumpter, was also later charged in connection with the conspiracy.
The legal proceedings brought the intricate details of the plot to light. Darnell Larry and Angelo Raptoplous both pleaded guilty to lesser charges and testified for the prosecution, providing crucial evidence against their co-conspirators. In May 2024, following an eight-day trial, a jury found Marco Bisbikis and Roy Larry guilty of first-degree premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder, assault with intent to murder, and felony firearm charges. The following month, both men were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Darnell Larry was sentenced to a term of five to six years and eight months in prison for his role in the murder plot.
