In the summer of 2022, a family gathering in Saginaw, Michigan, turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy, forever altering the lives of the Buendia family. Laura Buendia, a 24-year-old woman, was at her parents' home on South 11th Street for a cookout on the night of June 5th. Known for her warm heart and passion for baking, Laura was six months pregnant and eagerly anticipating the arrival of her first child, a daughter to be named Rosalina.
The joyous atmosphere of the family event was shattered when gunfire erupted. A relative, 51-year-old Juan M. Mireles, who had not been invited, arrived at the home following an argument involving his sister and another woman. Witnesses reported that Mireles confronted those at the party, leading to a violent exchange of gunfire. In the chaos that ensued, Laura, her nephew Mariano Escareño, and her cousin Rafael Campos were all fatally shot.
Laura was rushed to a local hospital where she succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. In a miraculous turn of events, doctors were able to deliver her unborn baby, Rosalina, who survived the horrific incident. The infant, weighing less than three pounds at birth, remained in the hospital for several months before being released into the care of her grandparents and her father, Joshua Tello.
Juan M. Mireles was arrested in October 2022 and charged with three counts of open murder and felony firearm possession. However, in a development that brought further anguish to the grieving families, Mireles later reached a plea deal with the Saginaw County Prosecutor's Office. He pleaded no contest to lesser charges of manslaughter and using a firearm to commit a felony. This plea meant he did not admit guilt but acknowledged that prosecutors had enough evidence for a conviction.
The plea agreement came with a recommended prison sentence of three to eight years. The family expressed their frustration and heartbreak over the perceived leniency of the sentence for the loss of three lives. At his sentencing, Mireles was ordered to serve a minimum of 10 years and 7 months to a maximum of 30 years in prison. The tragic and senseless violence of that June night left a permanent scar on the community and a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved Laura Buendia.
