In the early morning hours of July 10, 2022, the life of 14-year-old Keniyah Bryant was tragically cut short in a Detroit, Michigan apartment. A Black/African American female, Keniyah was with a group of teenagers, including her 13-year-old boyfriend, when a stolen handgun was being passed around. The evening took a devastating turn when the boy aimed the gun at Keniyah and fired, inflicting a fatal gunshot wound.
Detroit police responded to the scene at an apartment complex on Riverfront Drive around 4:11 a.m., where they found Keniyah, who was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, the group of teenagers fled the scene. However, the 13-year-old suspect later turned himself in to the authorities, accompanied by his parents. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office brought charges against him, which included one count of manslaughter, described as 'aimed with intent but without malice,' and one count of felony firearm. During a preliminary hearing, he was granted a $10,000 cash/surety bond, and a pre-trial was scheduled for August 9, 2022. It was also reported that less than a month after the shooting, the teen was arrested again for leading police on a chase.
While investigators initially suggested the shooting might have been accidental, Keniyah's mother, Detronia Randall, has publicly stated her belief that her daughter was intentionally killed. She started a GoFundMe campaign to help with legal fees in her pursuit of what she deems justice for Keniyah. The handgun used in the incident was reported to have been stolen from Eastpointe, and authorities were investigating how the teenagers came to possess it.
