In a heartbreaking incident on September 13, 2022, eight-year-old Ajanae Graham, a young girl from Detroit, Michigan, lost her life in a tragic shooting inside her own home. The devastating event unfolded when her 10-year-old brother discovered an unsecured handgun while they were playing. He accidentally discharged the weapon, striking his younger sister.
Neighbors, alarmed by the sound of a gunshot, rushed to the family's residence in the 8800 block of Heyden Street to find Ajanae
injured. Due to a delay in the ambulance's arrival, neighbors reportedly transported the young girl to a nearby firehouse. From there, first responders took her to a hospital, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries upon arrival.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Ajanae's 31-year-old mother, Erica Sade Graham, was arrested and faced multiple charges. The charges against her included involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree child abuse, and three counts of felony firearm. Authorities stated that the charges stemmed from her failure to safely secure the handgun in a home with children. Detroit Police Chief James White also commented on the 'quite concerning' living conditions within the home. Erica Graham was arraigned in the 36th District Court and given a $150,000 personal bond, with the condition of wearing a GPS tether with home confinement if released.
