In the fall of 2022, a heart-wrenching event unfolded in a Mount Pleasant, Michigan, home, resulting in the tragic deaths of two young brothers. Two-year-old Alonzo Alvarez, also known as 'Fonz,' and his three-year-old brother, Asa Alvarez, passed away in mid-November from injuries sustained in a violent incident. Their mother, Morningstar Pelcher, was also critically injured but survived.
The boys were members of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
On November 13, 2022, Tribal Police were called to a residence on the Isabella Reservation where they discovered the two children and their mother with gunshot wounds. Alonzo was pronounced dead at the scene. His older brother, Asa, was gravely injured and succumbed to his injuries a few days later. Their mother was hospitalized. The boys' father, Jeremy Alvarez, was also found deceased at the scene.
Investigations by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police pointed to the incident being a murder-suicide. It is believed that Jeremy Alvarez shot his two sons and their mother before taking his own life. The devastating event deeply affected the community, leaving behind a grieving family to navigate the profound loss of two joyful and vibrant toddlers.
The family described Alonzo as an outgoing boy who loved to tag along with his big brother, Asa. They were an inseparable pair who enjoyed playing together, reading books, and watching 'Spiderman.' Asa was remembered for his bright smile and love for playing with his toy cars. Though their lives were brief, their memories and infectious smiles left a lasting impact on their family and friends.
