In the small town of Belmont, Mississippi, a young patrolman's life was cut tragically short in the line of duty. Mickey Gene Johnson, a 20-year-old officer with the Belmont Police Department, was responding to a car theft in progress on December 1, 1977. With two years of service under his belt, Johnson was a dedicated and compassionate officer, remembered fondly by his community as a positive role model.
While attempting to apprehend the man stealing the vehicle, a struggle ensued.
The suspect, identified as Marion Stanley Osborne, managed to overpower the young officer and gain control of his service weapon. Osborne then fatally shot Johnson with his own gun before fleeing the scene.
Following the shooting, an investigation was launched, leading to the apprehension of Marion Stanley Osborne. On April 14, 1978, Osborne was convicted of capital murder in Tishomingo County and subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the death of Patrolman Johnson. After serving decades behind bars, Osborne died of natural causes at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman in January 2013. In honor of the fallen officer, a section of Mississippi Highway 25 in Belmont was named the Mickey Gene Johnson Memorial Highway.
