In the late hours of October 4, 2024, the life of 26-year-old Gary Lennard Henderson was cut short in a burst of violence within his own home at The Reserve of Byram Apartments in Byram, Mississippi. Just before midnight, the sound of multiple gunshots echoed through the apartment complex, prompting calls to the Byram Police Department. When officers arrived at the scene on Byram Drive, they discovered Henderson unresponsive inside his residence, having sustained several gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Henderson's death was quickly classified as a homicide. According to his family, Henderson, a welder by trade, had enjoyed a visit to the Mississippi State Fair shortly before he was killed. His mother revealed that he had been on the phone with someone upon returning home and that he may have seen his assailant before he was shot in the back while attempting to flee. She also stated that her son was not only murdered but also robbed. At the time of his death, he had been making plans to relocate to Atlanta.
As of nearly a year after the fatal shooting, the case remains unsolved, with no suspects publicly identified and no arrests made. The Byram Police Department, in collaboration with the Mississippi State Crime Lab and the FBI, continues to actively investigate the murder. Investigators have executed search warrants and subpoenas and are analyzing digital data in their search for leads.
