Deputy Sheriff Kirby Shell, aged 70, tragically lost his life on December 17, 1978, in Franklin County, Mississippi. He was shot and killed while assisting three conservation officers during an operation targeting illegal night hunters in the Homochitto National Forest. The officers encountered a group of three brothers hunting near the intersection of Highway 33 and Liberty Road, south of Roxie.
