Patrolman Buford Dedeaux, a 34-year-old officer with the Gulfport Police Department in Mississippi, tragically lost his life in the line of duty on June 8, 1979. The incident occurred around 12:30 am when Patrolman Dedeaux stopped a man on a bicycle near 25th Avenue and 34th Street for questioning. During the interaction, the suspect produced a .22 caliber handgun from a duffel bag and opened fire on Patrolman Dedeaux.
