Deputy Sheriff Robert L. Kirby, aged 25, tragically lost his life on December 1, 1981, in Houston, Mississippi. Deputy Kirby was serving with the Chickasaw County Sheriff's Department at the time of his death. He was attempting to serve a warrant on a man for domestic assault involving the man's wife when he was shot and killed. The suspect used a .30 caliber rifle to fatally wound Deputy Kirby.
