On a late summer night in Rawls Springs, Mississippi, the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer was tragically cut short. Deputy Sheriff John R. Klem, III, a 44-year-old Caucasian male, had served the Forrest County Sheriff's Office for thirteen years. On the evening of September 15, 1985, he responded to a call from the Big K Truck Stop located on U.S. 49 North, where two female clerks reported a man causing a disturbance.
Upon arriving at the scene, Deputy Klem recognized the suspect from an encounter the previous night. As he proceeded to search the man, the situation took a violent turn. The suspect attacked Deputy Klem, overpowering him and gaining control of his service weapon. The man then fired two shots, striking the deputy. Despite being rushed to Forrest General Hospital for medical attention, John R. Klem, III succumbed to his wounds on September 30, 1985.
The suspect, a 26-year-old male, was subsequently arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Following an investigation and legal proceedings, he was convicted of murder. On June 29, 1987, the man was sentenced to life in prison for the death of Deputy Klem. The fallen deputy was survived by his wife and their three sons.
