In the quiet community of Benndale, near Perkinston, Mississippi, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragic and fatal encounter for 76-year-old Horace Dixon. On December 10, 2014, Horace and his 64-year-old wife, Cheria, were found in a vehicle, both having suffered from gunshot wounds. Horace was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife was rushed to Singing River Hospital in critical condition.
The man responsible for the shooting was identified as their former son-in-law, James
Andrew Brown. The incident, which was rooted in domestic issues, set off an intensive 90-minute manhunt for Brown. The search involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including George County deputies, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, and the Stone County Sheriff's Department.
The search for the suspect came to a grim conclusion when authorities discovered Brown in a wooded area approximately 15 miles from where he had shot his former in-laws. He was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Three days after the shooting, on December 13, 2014, Cheria Dixon succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The investigation officially ruled the tragic event as a double murder-suicide, and with the death of the sole suspect, the case was closed without any arrests or further legal proceedings.
