In the quiet community of Necaise near Perkinston, Mississippi, a decorated veteran law enforcement officer's life was tragically cut short on February 1, 2021. Lieutenant Michael Anthony Boutte, a 57-year-old male and an eight-year veteran of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, responded to a distressing 911 call regarding a man threatening suicide on Caesar Necaise Road. A man of compassion and known for his ever-present smile, Lt.
Boutte arrived at the scene ready to help, a role he was known for throughout his long career in public service.
As he stepped out of his patrol vehicle, he was met with a sudden barrage of gunfire. The suspect, Joseph Michael Rohrbacker, fired at Lt. Boutte, striking him before he had a chance to engage with the situation. The wounds were critical. He was airlifted to a hospital in New Orleans, but despite the urgent medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later, leaving behind a family and a community in mourning. Lt. Boutte was not only a dedicated officer but also a U.S. Air Force veteran who had served during Operation Desert Storm.
A second deputy who arrived at the chaotic scene exchanged gunfire with Rohrbacker, wounding him. The suspect was then taken to a hospital for treatment before being taken into custody. The investigation that followed revealed a troubled motive behind the senseless act of violence. Rohrbacker later claimed he was trying to provoke the officers into killing him, a 'suicide by cop' attempt that instead resulted in the death of a beloved officer.
Joseph Michael Rohrbacker was charged with capital murder for the death of Lt. Boutte, as well as aggravated assault for shooting at the second deputy and another woman at the scene. In July 2023, Rohrbacker pleaded guilty to all charges. During the court proceedings, he expressed remorse for his actions. The judge handed down a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for the capital murder charge, with an additional 50 years for the assault charges to be served concurrently, ensuring that the man responsible for the untimely death of a hero would spend the rest of his days behind bars.
